Looking for one that has it all. Confident Garcia vocals. Premier GD musicianship. Pristine sound. I have a few, but panning for unknown gems. It's only 4' or so but I need to listen to this on eleven tonight. Family member in hospital tonight, biopsy tomorrow. Good thoughts appreciated for Karen.

Mentioned this one just recently as a TDIH. May be my all-time fave:

Most near any version from the Music Hall show in '75 through '77 should do the trick. This was one of those rare Dead tunes that was born almost fully formed and peaked very early.

Try that one on. It's the tightest one I know, beating out 6-9-77 by a hair (though the Franklin's is superior in the latter show).

I noticed that this pitch corrected Hunter Seamons Soundboard of that show does not seem to stream or play at all. Anyone know how to get this fixed?

The best Help on the Way is from DP3, 5-22-77. I dont think it's streamable.

Either that one or 8/13/75 billydlions, which is also unavailable for streaming.

But 9/28/75 will do in a pinch. Best of thoughts for your Karen...

I think 8/13/75 probably the best performance of H>S>F. It's tight and fast and doesn't waste any time. The difference between Garcia's playing in 74 vs. 75 is nothing short of remarkable. They really found a "new music" to put forth and had completely inhabited its sonic landscape, and this show is what that new approach produced. It's a shame they didn't keep up the inventiveness in the years to come.

Those are both good versions as the band was very well rehearsed for those shows. BTW, I've been stuck in 1974 for some time now and find it a great year! If only Help-Slip-Frank were being played in 1974 instead of Loose Lucy and Money Money (One can dream).

Well they did sneak in a couple of Slipknot!s during 1974...

Enjoy '74. I have been studying the September Europe tour over the past several days. But that is a bit of a struggle :(

9-18-74 is a pretty good show- probably better than DP7, dont you think?

I think I read in Scully's book that there was a lot of coke going around on that tour and it was not the best of times.

I think the Dijon performance is quite a bit better than pretty good :)

DP #7 is fair. The rest of the shows from that tour pretty much suck!

Best of luck to you both; I am of course, out of my era on this, as I assume you've gathered hereabouts, but having been "there" (in person, or at radio/party/reception) for both 75 versions, Aug & Sep, I can say I thought they were excellent at the time!

So, my two cents is to echo CLIFF et al above on those two. Suppose that means you have to have OFTV for Aug, but Sep is here...

I hope it's not considered blasphemy, but the Help on the Way that leads off this Phil & Friends show with Steve Kimock and Trey Anastasio is one of my favorite versions of the tune:

Best wishes.

Blasphemy or not, I'm glad you pointed out the show. It's new to me, and it's sounding real good (and downloadable!). Thanks for the rec.

If you have access to 'One From The Vault,' that's my favorite live HOTW... but the Blues For Allah version may be the best, even if it isn't live...
